The Biggest Set Comes to Life

This is a huge title (Roads & Boats) — both in terms of the box size and the game length. Long time ago I owned a copy and even played it once or twice, but after getting hard bounces when I made a mistake at the beginning of the game, I decided to search for something more friendly and fun. Eventually, I found myself enjoying 18xx games the most — where a bad move at the start might be even worse 😅

This copy we received from our old friend, and it was great fun to create a set for it. I love this kind of work — when everything fits perfectly and there is a good storage solution for every game component.

First, I started with all resources, splitting them between two identical trays. This way it is easier to play with two or more players for sure. There is also space in the game box for one additional tray if you would like to divide resources into three trays. The third tray contains all buildings, and the last one holds all components from the expansion.

But the biggest surprise came when I started searching for a solution for the terrain hexes — our Tarot Card Holders turned out to be perfect for this purpose. You will need quite a few of them to fit all hexes, but the final effect looks and works really nicely.

The same applies to storage for each player’s components — the tarot holder fits everything perfectly. It’s also very convenient because you can easily search inside it, and you can use the lid for sorting pieces and preparing the game.

Separate deep Standard Card Holders fit the glass stones and mines perfectly.

That’s all — so it may sound like a small storage solution, but there are 24 trays in total! I believe this is the biggest storage set we have created so far.
