New Tray Sets

Hungarian Rhapsody – Mixed Tray Set Works Best!

We’d like to share one of our latest storage solutions, which uses a combination of our new counter trays along with one standard tray. This setup is extremely versatile and could work well for many different wargames.

This particular configuration was designed for Hungarian Rhapsody, a title from the Operational Combat Series (OCS) by MMP — but any game in the OCS line could benefit from a similar approach.

Key Advantages:

  • The main shallow standard tray with 15 compartments is ideal for storing large quantities of counters where many are of the same type — for example: status markers, control counters, objective markers, or victory point tokens.
  • The counter trays allow you to organize units by scenario or army. You can use as many as you need — in this case, we used five.
  • This layout lets you keep one tray of shared/common counters easily accessible during gameplay, while maintaining separate trays for faction or army-specific counters.

Fit & Function:

This solution fits perfectly into the game box — which was not an easy task!
We received the game came with 3 standard black trays, which caused a significant lid lift, and the trays were overfilled.

With our setup, we’ve used:

The shallow tray is particularly well-suited for storing many counters because of its ideal depth and compartment size, making it easy to pick up counters during play.

It works perfectly with the most common counter sizes:

  • ½″ counters ≈ 13 mm
    • You can fit 16 counters flat in one compartment.
    • Total compartment capacity: approximately 80 counters (stacked).
  • 5/8″ counters = 16 mm
    • You can fit 9 counters flat in one compartment.
    • Total capacity: around 45 counters
    • This setup can be seen in Spruance Leader.
  • 1″ counters = 25.4 mm
    • You can fit 4 counters flat in one compartment.
    • Total capacity: about 20 counters.
    • Also visible in Spruance Leader.

If you’re an OCS player or just looking to improve your counter management, this mixed tray solution is a great way to combine organization, accessibility, and box compatibility.

Looking Ahead

We recently received a great suggestion to rename our “Counter Trays” to “Counter Display Trays.”
We really like the idea — what do you think?
Does that name better reflect their true functionality?

Also, while designing the Hungarian Rhapsody setup, we realized that splitting each compartment in half could be a great idea.
This wouldn’t reduce the total capacity for small ½″ counters, but it would allow for a 30-compartment tray, which could be especially useful for many games that use small counters. What do you think about this idea?
