I wanted to draw the winner today, but unfortunately, the Random Number Picker service is not working. I tried to find a similar tool but couldn’t find anything user-friendly. So, I thought of a slightly different and more exciting way to choose our winner. We’re introducing a small change in our selection process, which will now have two steps:
Step 1: Assign Numbers to Participants
All participants will be listed with numbers starting from 0. This list will be available at least one day before we move on to Step 2.
Step 2: Selection Through a Song
To choose the winner, we will wait for the next broadcast of my favorite Polish radio program, ‘Radio Nowy Świat’ (Radio New World), specifically the ‘Sejsmograf’ show, link: https://nowyswiat.online/audycje/sejsmograf. It airs every Friday from 10 PM to 12 AM Central European Time. The winner will be determined by the last song played in this program. Don’t worry, you don’t need to listen to the entire program, as the song list is available the day after the broadcast.
For example, the song ‘Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You’ by Stevie Nicks was recently used. We will verify the official length of the song in seconds from the Discogs database (link: https://www.discogs.com/master/567418-Stevie-Nicks-Has-Anyone-Ever-Written-Anything-For-You). Suppose the song length is 275 seconds; we will divide this number by the total number of participants and the remainder from this division will determine the winner. For instance, if the remainder is 3, then the participant with number 3 will be the winner. It is: 275 : 8 = 34, the reminder is here 3, because 34*8=272 and you need to add 3.
Exceptions:
- If multiple versions of the same song by the same artist exist, we always use the first (oldest) version.
- If the song has not been released yet, we will use the previous song played in the program.
This method may seem lengthy in description, but it is quite simple in practice. Here are all the steps summarized:
- Generate and publish the list of participants with numbers.
- Tune into ‘Sejsmograf’ on Radio Nowy Świat to hear the last song of the program: https://nowyswiat.online/audycje/sejsmograf
- Check the official song length on Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/
- Divide the song length by the number of participants to find the remainder.
- The participant whose number matches the remainder is the winner.
This way, everyone can verify the winner at the same moment each Friday at midnight!
We’ll use this exciting new method to determine the winner of our current contest. So, let’s wait until Friday to see who will be the lucky winner!

Luke Sital-Singh & Lisa Hannigan – Santa Fe
The last one (Luke Sital-Singh & Lisa Hannigan – Santa Fe) is a really good track, but it hasn’t been released yet, so we need to check earlier songs.
I realized that the last three songs weren’t in the Discogs database! The first one I found from the bottom is Niklas Paschburg – Cyan, released in 2020, with a length of 3:34. That’s 214 seconds, and when we divide that by 8, the result is 26 with a remainder of 6! So the winner is Matthias! Congratulations!
The length of the song system isn’t working as perfectly as I expected – there are just too many new releases. So, we’ll be changing the winner selection system again soon. In the meantime, new games from Michal (Boardgame Chronicle) will be delivered to us on Monday, so we’ll have new titles to create an exciting contest soon. Stay tuned!
